New York Hip specialist

The hip is one of the most important joints in the body as it allows us to walk, run, jump, and generally stay mobile. Due to the structure or the joint, the hip is very stable and allows for a wide range of motion. When healthy, it takes great force to injure them. However, playing sports, running, overuse or falling can lead to hip injuries. If you’ve recently suffered a hip injury or have started experiencing pain in your hip, it’s time to see a New York hip specialist!

These are the top 7 most common hip problems:

Bursitis

Bursitis is the inflammation of the bursa. There are two common forms of bursitis in the hip that we see, trochanteric bursitis and iliopsoas bursitis. While iliopsoas bursitis is commonly known as hip bursitis, the pain you feel is usually felt in the groin area.

Arthritis

While there are multiple types of arthritis that affect the hip, the most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis occurs when inflammation and injury to a joint cause a breaking down of cartilage tissue. It’s common for osteoarthritis to cause pain, swelling, and deformity.

Fractures

A hip fracture is when you have a break in the upper quarter of your thigh bone, near the hip joint. A hip fracture almost always requires surgical repair or replacement, followed by physical therapy. As you age, it’s important to prioritize maintaining bone density and trying to avoid falls to prevent hip fractures.  If you are suffering from a hip fracture, make an appointment with our New York hip doctor, Dr. Roy Davidovitch, who specializes in the anterior approach hip replacement.

Strains and Tears

Hip strains and tears are more common than you think with overuse activities such as running and sports, but can also occur with a sudden act such as a fall or a stretch injury. Two common strains we see at OrthoManhattan are the adductor groin strain and a hip flexor strain. While the most common tear we see is a labral tear – an injury to your labrum, the soft tissue that covers your hip socket.

Tendonitis

Hip tendonitis, also known as hip flexor tendonitis, is inflammation or irritation of a tendon in your hip. Hip tendonitis is often caused due to overuse activities such as running, sports, or a repetitive job. Another form of tendonitis known as iliopsoas tendonitis is characterized by pain and clicking or snapping in the groin, also known as snapping hip syndrome.

Piriformis Syndrome

Piriformis syndrome is a condition in which the piriformis muscle, located in the buttock region, spasms and causes buttock pain. This disorder is caused when the piriformis muscle compresses your sciatic nerve.

Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome

Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome, or ITBFS, commonly occurs after repetitive use such as running, cycling, or other sports motions. This occurs when the tough band of tissue that extends from the outside of your hip to the outside of your knee (iliotibial band) becomes so tight that it rubs against the outer portion of your femur.
